another weekend start-up project

Hi guys. I know, I have been slacking on the posts lately. I'm one of those players who scores in spurts, so maybe I'll get a couple in a row out... no promises though.

Journals are great things aren't they? They are vaults for thoughts--private vaults for private thoughts. I used to write in one a lot when I was a teenager and on my mission, but lately I "haven't had the time" or I "don't have anything interesting to write about". We've all said those words before, no? Well, I have an idea.

Journal writing is important because it allows us to unwind and express things that might otherwise go unexpressed. Since I think it's so important, this weekend I am going to build a mobile/web application to eliminate excuses like those aforementioned.

Introducing...

Journalo.us (pronounced journal-US) is a micro-diary service that gives you just enough space to write the highlights of your day. Features of the end product will include:

  • each "page" in journalo.us will be devoted to a day of the year, therefore as you write today's entry you can read last year's as well
  • each day the user will receive 255 characters to describe the events of the day (this won't only lessen the intimidation of a large blank page, but also get the user to think carefully about what was important that day)
  • ability to set custom notifications that remind the user that it's time to write
  • there will be an embedded travel log to track your journeys
  • journalo.us will also be able to log the books you have finished reading and when (I think books are great)
  • goal tracking is important so that will get a spot on the app as well
  • eventually users will be able to design a physical paper version of their journalo.us (in booklet form) to print for their prosperity posterity (wow)
  • the service will be completely free
Why am I doing this? For two reasons mainly: a) I really want to use this service myself and b) I am always striving hard to be cool. SOOO...

Please support me in my efforts by:
  1. Signing up for updates at http://journalo.us
  2. "Liking" it's Facebook page
  3. Following it on The Twitter

Thanks guys!!

  2. I was wondering if you meant "prosperity" or "posterity" on Facebook haha. This is pretty neat, dude man! I've been thinking lately about how an online journal or blogging would be nice if I could print it out in a nice book every year or so, sort of in a Shutterfly sort of fashion, so I could actually have all my posts to have and to hold forever. So maybe think about that...hook up with Shutterfly and make some money. Yeah?? I know that's not very realistic. And this is cool without it so forget I said anything and pretend I didn't just leave a really long, pointless comment.

  3. @Amy, thanks man! That's so awesome!

@Me (not me), you're right on the money about booklet creation, but probably not Shutterfly... it will probably be something that goes through lulu.com. We'll have to see how things work out.

    Thanks guys!
